France disburses the first tranche of support to the Water Sector worth USD 83.7million.
This budget support was agreed during the visit of His Majesty King Abdullah II in France in September 2014, when a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Government of Jordan and French Development Agency (AFD), with provision for both budget support and project financing.
The water sector has been identified in this MoU as a key sector of intervention for AFD in Jordan, one of the most water scarce countries in the world, a challenge exacerbated by the regional situation and the influx of refugees. AFD assistance in the sector combines projects and budget support.
The financing agreement was signed in October during the visit of the French Prime Minister, Manuel Valls, as part of a USD 265.3 million package also including two major projects. The second tranche of this important support will be disbursed in 2016.
